Ceremony At the Memorial Wall arranged by Amerasian

On June 21, six members of the chapter – Bill Bennett, Tom Devlin, Bill Gray, Dave Gudes, Mike Najarian and Art Wong – participated in a memorial event sponsored by the Amerasian Independent Voice of America at the Wall for Father’s Day.

The Wall was decked out in yellow roses and small notes in honor of the day. Over 25 Amerasians from all parts of the country gathered at the apex of the Wall and distributed yellow roses to all participants. The group completed the event with a candlelight vigil (sadly, the candles nearly all blew out in the wind) at the Women’s Memorial.

Thoughts About The Ceremony At The Memorial Wall

“Thank you for the invitation to be there. I must say that, that was one of the best Father's Day that I have ever had. I really enjoyed being there with so many bright and intelligent young people. I tried to avoid talking about all of my brothers and sisters that are named on the wall. Everytime I talk about the wall, I get very emotional, and I didn't want to cry in front of all of you.  If writing to my congressman will help in your effort to get some kind of cooperation from the government, please let me know the details and I will get others to do the same thing.  Please keep me informed of anything I can do to help, also let me know if you all take donations so that I can contribute.”

Nguyet and Tara,

When something special happens at the Wall it is called "Wall Magic".  Such as somebody spotting a name they have been looking for or meeting a long lost friend at the Wall. This Saturday, when you both took advantage of addressing the kids in that "teachable" moment - the Wall magic happened again. This magical moment happened because of the skills and compassion you both have.  At that moment, it was so easy to feel your positive energy.

When I saw the semicircle of kids and teachers gathered around you both, I realized that those kids and teachers were truly lucky. They were being taught a lesson in history from two people that actually took part in those events of Vietnam history. How fortunate these kids were.  The moment could have passed where the kids left the Wall less educated. However, both of you wouldn't let that happen. The important thing is, these kids learned about Amerasians from two caring people.
